After waiting what seemed like an eternity for the game to release, mortal kombat 1 is finally here, and it brings with it a ton of new Fatalities, Fatal Blows, and plenty of stages to fight in. Developers NetherRealm really went all out when designing the settings for their latest game. Many are packed with color and detail, to the point that it’s hard not to be distracted by the visually stunning backgrounds.
While some of these stages are classic arenas with a new coat of paint, others have been introduced as part of Liu Kang’s new timeline in which the game takes place. This creates truly unique areas to fight. With a wide selection of stages to choose from, some players are already starting to gravitate towards some stages more than others.
8 Tarkatan Colony
The setting of Tarkatan Colony may be familiar to anyone who has played mortal kombat 11. This is because it is essentially a revamped version of the Tarkatan War camp that appeared in that game. However, this time, the setting is much brighter and more colorful. The lack of gory imagery and burning corpses reflects the more sympathetic view of Tarkatans that the new game is going for.
It is truly a pleasure to admire the beautiful rock formations that cover the stage between rounds. Just make sure you don’t get too distracted, otherwise the opponent might decide to take advantage of the opportunity. With its stunning visuals and relevance to the story, Tarkatan Colony is definitely a setting that players will return to.
7 The meat pits
Shang Tsung’s horrifying Flesh Pit makes its triumphant return in mortal kombat 1, and it’s as bloody as ever. By examining some of the unfortunate test subjects in the background, players can glimpse just how far Shang Tsung’s mission to combine science and dark magic has come, resulting in some crude experiments.
Many players will like the mysterious and unnerving nature of the setting, which brings it back to the classic. Mortal Kombat arenas of the first games. There’s also an option to turn off “Experiments” to make things a little nicer to look at. For fans who fear there are too many clean, pretty stages in the game, rest assured that Flesh Pits is reminiscent of the bloody battlefields that have become synonymous with the series.
6 Ying Fortress
When the Ying Dynasty fell, they left behind their beloved fortress, which has since been covered in ice and haunted by the souls who never made it out alive. While it’s always fun to face off in front of a crowd of spectators in an arena, there’s also a time and place for isolated scenarios. These venues emphasize that feeling of being in a one-on-one duel to the death with a rival.
Fans may remember the same kind of atmosphere related to Dead Woods from Mortal Kombat The closed arena is often considered the ideal place to show who is truly the strongest, without distractions getting in the way. Ying Fortress seems to be replicating that notion, making it a go-to stage for fighters looking to resolve their differences.
5 Wu Shi Academy
If any stage in mortal kombat 1 emphasizes the improvement that the images and lighting have received, it is the Wu Shi Academy. The delicate sakura trees swaying in the background, the green bushes surrounding the arena, and the classic traditional Japanese temples come together to create a beautiful, tranquil setting that is fun to play in.
Shaolin students training in the background also help make this stage feel alive. Considering how iconic this stage has become, it’s great to see it return with such an amazing improvement.
4 sun do
Sun Do is the capital city of Outworld and might be the most vibrant and exciting setting in the game. Colorful fireworks explode in the background and crowds of people celebrate the bloody spectacle before them. In the meantime, players should try to stay calm to demonstrate their combat prowess to their opponent, but it’s hard not to get caught up in the festivities.
Sun Do appears several times during the story mode, so players can expect to fight here on several occasions. That’s definitely not a bad thing, considering how lush and eye-catching the setting looks. While the daytime version of this stage will feature livelier crowds in the background, the nighttime version is where the stage shines in terms of visual spectacle. It is best to choose this when the option is available.
3 Teahouse
Fans of the first stage could see in the first trailers of mortal kombat 1 It was the Tea House. This stage is unlike anything that has appeared before in the series. this is the closest Mortal Kombat Fans may break out into a bar fight. Crowds of people admire the bloody carnage from afar while drinking their favorite beverages, while two combatants are torn to shreds.
The tea house’s brown color palette is complemented by the bright rays of the sun and low green plants, which add variety to this setting. Additionally, the small bright red lanterns and tables scattered around the area give this stage a somewhat cozy atmosphere, making it a great training stage.
2 living forest
Forest stages have always been present in Mortal Kombat games, but the Living Forest in mortal kombat 1 could be the best one yet. As the name suggests, the stage is filled with eerie trees whose glowing eyes fixate on the combatants as they go head to head. But there is also a bright and delicate atmosphere to the area, thanks to the multitude of vibrant colors and the relaxing rays of sunlight peeking through the trees.
There is a storm version of the stage that completely changes its aesthetic, making it seem more dangerous and mysterious. This drastic variation makes the stage incredibly replayable. For anyone who loves those haunting stages of mortal Kombat past, you won’t want to skip this one.
1 Cage Mansion
Jonny Cage’s not-so-humble abode is packed with quirky little details to pay attention to, all of which show off Cage’s goofy, charismatic personality. Not only does the stage look absolutely stunning, but it also feels much larger than it is due to the variation in backgrounds.
In the center is Cage’s luxurious pool with the sun shining down from the mountains in the background. The sides of the room are much more secluded and feature plenty of decorations, tables, and comfortable couches. There’s even a spiral staircase, which is as elegant as you’d expect from everyone’s favorite movie star. Although Cage Mansion has been shown in almost a single trailer, the fact that players are still so drawn to it shows how amazing it is.
mortal kombat 1 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and PC for Kollector’s and Premium Edition owners. The standard edition will be released on September 19, 2023.
